Photo Walk 1/08/23
January is a good time for a photo walk. It’s quiet in Charleston during the winter months and that makes the chances of running into a friend feel more likely.
I was delighted to run into my friend Lauren. Lauren has a dog named Willa who shares the same hair color as Lauren. They are a perfect pair for a photograph. She invited me to take a photo of the two of them before I could ask, and I was so giddy that the framing was a little off on this one. I would have liked to get more space above Lauren’s head, and take a step back so I could make sure to still get Willa. The focus is nice though, and I’m happy with that.
Further along the walk I met a man named Danny, and while we were talking, his wife Lynn joined the seat next to him. I’ve seen Danny around the neighborhood plenty of times, but never stopped to talk to him. I was glad I did, if just for the sake of getting in the practice of talking to strangers more easily. You learn something every time. He invited me to lunch with his buddy who is a photographer for the local newspaper, but I had conflicting plans already. I got his card though, and his wife followed me on Instagram. We had a nice email exchange the following day, and I’ll definitely stop to say hello next time I see either of them. This photo of the two of them is sweet, but the light is pretty harsh, so it’s not super lovely. I would have loved to take this closer to golden hour, and have gotten some warm light through the trees behind them. Mental note to go out for a photo walk closer to golden hour.
I was attracted to pairs of chairs on my walk, and there were several I didn’t photograph. Not for any reason, besides the fact that I was shooting film and I didn’t know how much time / money I wanted to invest in the whole “pairs of chairs” theme. If it continues to find its way through the next few walks, maybe I’ll let it settle, and become something. I’m happiest with the second photo (even though it’s not a “pair”). I almost didn’t take that one but I’m glad I did.
